Maxim looks furious as Livia leads him into the dining room. “What’s this all about?” he asks.

Livia squeezes his arm. “I told you. Your father wishes to make amends.”

“Let him speak,” he growls, glaring at me.

“Your wife is right. I want to make a start in repairing things between us. That’s what this dinner is about.”

Maxim’s eyes narrow. “You want something. That’s all this is about.”

“Yes, I want your forgiveness for being such a terrible father lately.”

He raises a brow. “Only lately?”

I sigh. “Fine, most of your life. Would you have a seat?”

He eyes me warily, but sits at the table in his usual seat to the right of me at the head. Livia takes the only other seat to the left, opposite her husband. It’s surprising she doesn’t hold our first encounter against me, since I did get my son to bend her over and spank her ass. Ever since, she’s been relatively tame toward me.

“How are you healing?” I ask, meeting Maxim’s furious gaze.

“You asked me that yesterday.” He crosses his arms over his chest, wincing slightly as he does. “I’m fine.”

I clench my jaw and nod in response, as Olga brings the first course in. We remain silent until she leaves, and that’s when I turn my attention to my daughter-in-law. “How have you been, Livia?”

Her eyes widen slightly at the question, but she shrugs. “As good as can be, considering my husband was shot.”

“Why don’t you cut the bullshit and tell us what you want, Father?” Maxim says.

I shake my head. “I told you there’s no ulterior motive to tonight’s dinner.” I grab my spoon and taste the soup, which is as delicious as always. “I was wrong not to visit you after they shot you.”

“You already said that yesterday. I don’t need to listen to anymore of your half-hearted apologies.” He glances at Livia and then stands. “Let’s go home.”

“Olga has gone to a lot of trouble to prepare dinner.” Livia shakes her head. “We will eat it, whether you like it or not.”

My son’s eyes flash at Livia’s brazen refusal to leave, and after a few beats holding her gaze, he backs down and sits.

I never thought I’d see the day when a woman could speak to my son like that. He’s always been rather controlling with the opposite sex.

He notices me smirking and glares. “What are you smirking at?”

“Nothing.” I lift my glass of wine up and sip it. “Livia reminds me so much of your mother.”

There’s a flash of surprise in my son’s eyes, as if my mention of his mother disarmed him. After all, I’ve always been so cagey when he brought up her up in the past, and it’s because of my guilt. My guilt for forcing her into a marriage she didn’t truly want. It’s been eating at me for years, but I’ve seen the error of my ways.

Livia clears her throat. “I’ll take that as a compliment, as I believe she was a formidable woman.”

“Indeed, she was one of the few women I respected.
